The Tour
Nagarahole National Park, also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, is a renowned wildlife sanctuary located in the state of Karnataka, India. Spanning over the Kodagu (Coorg) and Mysore districts, it forms a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Covering an area of approximately 643 square kilometers, the park features a diverse landscape with dense forests, streams, hills, valleys, and waterfalls, providing a rich habitat for a variety of flora and fauna. The Kabini River flows through the park, creating a lush environment and supporting a diverse ecosystem.
Nagarahole is famous for its high density of tigers, leopards, and elephants. Other mammals include Indian bison (gaur), wild dogs (dholes), sloth bears, and various species of deer such as chital, sambar, and barking deer. The park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to over 270 species of birds, including the crested serpent eagle, Malabar trogon, and the great Indian hornbill. It also houses a variety of reptiles and amphibians, including marsh crocodiles, various species of snakes, and numerous types of frogs.
The park’s vegetation is primarily tropical moist deciduous forests, with regions of tropical dry deciduous forests and montane shola-grassland. Notable trees such as teak, sandalwood, silver oak, and rosewood are commonly found here. Nagarahole was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and later upgraded to a national park in 1988. It is also a critical tiger reserve under Project Tiger. As part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, it plays a vital role in biodiversity conservation and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Nagarahole offers excellent safari experiences with jeep and boat safaris, providing visitors with opportunities to witness wildlife in their natural habitat. The best time to visit Nagarahole is between October and May, when the weather is pleasant and wildlife sightings are more frequent. There are various lodges and resorts around the park that cater to tourists, offering comfortable stays and guided tours.
The park is home to several indigenous tribal communities, such as the Jenu Kuruba and the Betta Kuruba, who have lived in harmony with the forest for generations. Nagarahole National Park stands as a testament to India’s rich natural heritage, offering a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, and those seeking tranquility amidst nature.
